Why should I consider feeding whole food meals?

The benefits of whole food meals are many and can be found in much detail through our website.

Feeding whole foods is not revolutionary. Dog owners have fed pets raw meat and whole foods for centuries prior to the invention of kibble and canned food. Whilst we are made to believe that kibble is the best for our pets, the truth is that if we want to feed our pets the best food its best to put the kibble back on the shelf. Nutrients and minerals needed for our pets to thrive are lost during high-heat processing used to produce kibble.

Is it safe for my dog to eat bones?

All our mixes contain finely ground bones, removing any choking hazards. That said, it is safe to treat your dog with whole bones which are appropriate in size and hardness as long as your dog is not an aggressive eater or kibble fed. It is also vital that you monitor your dog whilst chewing on any bone for safety purposes and to attentively monitor whilst chewing.

Chewing on bones can help clean teeth and act as mental simulation.

Why is a raw diet best for dogs?

As for humans, a fresh food diet is better for our pet's health. By feeding dogs a raw diet, we are providing them the nutrition that their body needs to thrive and food which their body was made to process. In fact, a raw diet is commonly referred to as a biologically-appropriate or species-appropriate diet for dogs since it is intended to mimic the diet they would consume in the wild.  Just as a fresh food diet is best for our health, the same is true for our dogs. Better digestions and a shinier coat are only a few of the changes you will note when shifting to a real food diet.

The benefits of feeding a raw diet can be found Benefits of Whole Food meals.

Dogs who have a compromised immune system may be better off with The K9 Geek Cook-able meals.  For pets which are not healthy, we recommend consulting a veterinary professional prior to starting your pet on a raw diet.

How much raw should I feed my dog?

The daily feeding amount will depend on your pet’s age, weight, and activity level. With discretionary adjustments for proper weight management according to your dog’s age and activity level, we recommend feeding your dog 2-3% of their ideal body weight per day on a one or two-meal-per-day schedule.

For a puppy follow the guidelines outlined on the puppy feeding page.

Which raw mix is the best?

All K9 Geek meals are nutritionally balanced ensuring you loved  furry companion is getting all nutritional needs in each meal. We recommend starting raw on bland white meats such as rabbit, chicken and turkey. Assuming no protein dislikes or protein allergies, we recommend rotating the meals regularly. The wider the array of mixes fed, the better.

What if my dog has allergies?

We produce single-protein focused and customised mixes to cater for dogs with specific food allergies. If your pet is struggling with allergies and you’re not sure what is triggering them, start simple by following an elimination diet  to help determine the trigger(s), and where allergies are coming from food.

What do I do if my dog wont eat the raw meals?

Whilst the majority of dogs immediately take to raw meals, for others, switching to a new form of diet can be an adjustment. If you are struggling with the transition try incorporating foods like nutritional yeast or warm bone broth to entice your dog as they get accustomed to the new diet. You may also entice your dog by slightly warming the meals over a boiling pot of water (bain marie).

What do I do if my dog has loose stools?

Digestives changes are common when switching foods, but it is best to take steps to resolve loose stools if they do occur. If your dog is experiencing loose stools during transition, we recommend taking the transition process a bit slower. Also, dietary additions like prebiotics can help to get your pet regular again. Learn more in our Switching to Whole food Blog.

Is feeding raw dangerous for dogs?

No! Dogs are natural carnivores and are biologically built to consume and digest raw meat and animal parts. Meats utilised are all from reputable sources and sanitary conditions at our production sites are of highest standards.

My vet is against raw feeding. What should I do?

While many veterinarians and pet nutritionists are increasingly supporting raw feeding, it is not uncommon to meet a veterinarian who is against it. Most veterinarians’ concerns with feeding a raw diet lie with pet parents unknowingly making their own incomplete meals that aren’t nutritionally balanced.

Refer to Your vet is against raw feeding - here is what to ask!

Can kibble and raw be fed together?

In theory the answer is yes. However, feeding 100% raw will promote optimal health, best digestion and will produce the most beneficial results. If you decide to feed a mix of kibble and raw, we recommend shifting as much of the diet to raw food as possible. It is pertinent to note that some dogs do not do well with mixing kibble and raw within a diet.

Can your food be cooked?

Whilst we beleive that optimal nutrition is experienced when our meals are fed raw, we have also formulated meals which can be lightly cooked.

What size dogs can eat your food?

Any size dogs can consume our food. Our mixes including all bone content are ground into a minced meal making each mixure safely consumable even for the smallest of pets.

Are vegetables in mixes cooked?

To assist in the digestion of all vegetables in our mixes especially root vegetables, we use only washed and boiled vegetables.

Do I need to add anything to your meals prior to feeding?

Other than supportive supplements as required by each indivudal dog, no additives are required for our raw meals to be complete.

Cooking meals results in loss of vitamins and mineral and hence if you will be cooking our meals, we recommend adding at least Vince The Vet - Vitality and if possible also Vince The Vet - Immunity.

I gave my dog a raw meal and he vomited/has loose stools. Should I be worried?

Pets who have been fed highly processed diets have stomach acidity which is directly dictated by the meat protein content of that diet i.e. less acidic stomachs. Until their body adjusts to its natural PH levels, the body may "reject" raw meat and bone through vomiting or diarrhea. A dog's body needs 7-10 days on a meat based diet for the gastric acidity levels to drop down to the natural (preferred) PH level. Hence, if you see these syptoms, we recommend to transition the diet slowly over 7-10 days following our guide. Vomiting and/or loose stool should stop as soon as the gastric acidity is allowed to normalise (7-10 days). To help tummy upsets during transition period we recommend using one of our digestive support products
